In December 2022, India passed amendments to the <\/span>Energy Conservation Act<\/span><\/b>, granting the government the authority to establish a <\/span>domestic carbon credit trading scheme<\/span><\/b>. This signaled a bold shift from project-based offsets to a full-fledged carbon market regulated by the <\/span>Bureau of Energy Efficiency<\/span><\/b><\/a> (BEE)<\/span><\/b> and the <\/span>Ministry of Power<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Corporates<\/span><\/b>: Over 100 Indian companies have made net-zero commitments, with leaders like Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, and Mahindra Group leading the charge. These organizations are positioning themselves as both buyers and developers in the evolving carbon marketplace.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Project Developers<\/span><\/b>: Companies like Verra-certified Ekologi and CarbonCraft Design are pioneering innovations from biochar production in Assam to carbon-negative building materials. Social enterprise Selco Foundation is creating impactful renewable mini-grids in Tamil Nadu that generate valuable carbon credits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fintech Platforms<\/span><\/b>: Tech innovators such as EKI Energy Services, Creduce, and ClimateConnect are building blockchain-based carbon trading platforms and registries that enhance transparency and solve the double-counting challenge plaguing traditional markets.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, challenges remain. According to a 2024 report by <\/span>FICCI<\/span><\/b><\/a>, 67% of surveyed Indian businesses cited regulatory uncertainty and lack of standardized methodologies as barriers to active participation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If executed with integrity and transparency, India’s carbon market could generate <\/span>$90 billion in revenue by 2030<\/span><\/b>, according to a projection by the <\/span>Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More importantly, this isn\u2019t just about trading emissions \u2014 it’s about <\/span>channeling capital into communities<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>incentivizing green innovation<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>enhancing India\u2019s climate diplomacy<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The international carbon market under Article 6 allows countries to trade emission reductions. The alignment of domestic schemes with Article 6 will be essential \u2014 both to maintain credibility and to ensure Indian carbon credits are globally fungible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The success of this alignment will depend on <\/span>MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification)<\/span><\/b> infrastructure, third-party validation systems, and a digital-first approach to registries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
